• Navigate a complicated medical diagnosis or multiple co-morbidities
• Attend doctors appointments, monitor in-hospital admissions at your bedside
• Assistance finding a specialist or obtain a second opinion
• Obtain and organize medical records 
• Provide information about your chronic condition or illness
• Research possible clinical trials in the area
• Locate free or reduced cost community resources
• Assist with obtaining prior authorizations and/or work with insurance company to help get authorization approved
• Organize a medication reconciliation between pharmacy & physician
• Set up payment arrangements with medical providers and/or work to reduce out of pocket expenses

Do patient advocates need a license?  No, there is no formal licensing required, however, there is a certification that demonstrates competency in the field. 

What is the difference between an independent patient advocate and a hospital/insurance advocate? Unlike hospital advocates, an independent advocate is private pay, so my alliance is with you. An advocate supplied by the hospital or insurance company will ultimately have their employer's interest at heart, first and foremost.
